2 Georgia men acquitted of trafficking meth charge

By TARA JENNINGS Ledger Staff Writer tara@gaffneyledger.com

Two Buford, Ga., men were cleared of trafficking methamphetamine during a trial in General Sessions Court last week.

Joel Dorante Reyes was acquitted by a Cherokee County jury, while Circuit Court Judge Brooks P. Goldsmith Jr. issued a directed verdict in favor of Victor Manuel Camacho Solorio, 21, because he wasn't driving the vehicle and did not own the vehicle.

Reyes' defense attorney claimed his client did not know the drugs were in a tire cover. He claimed a family member asked Reyes to drive the vehicle to Gastonia, N.C.

The drugs were found in a tire cover on the back of the SUV, narcotics agent Capt. Joey Guyton testified. Agents with the Cherokee County Metro Narcotics Unit received a tip that a SUV carrying methamphetamine was en route to the county from Atlanta. Officers waited alongside the interstate for the vehicle, and stopped the SUV near Mile Marker 101.
