Literacy Association

to hold golf tourney

The Cherokee County Literacy Association will hold a charitable golf tournament at Cherokee National Golf Course on Friday, June 9, starting at noon. The proceeds from this tournament will be used to teach local adults how to read. The tournament's format will be captain's choice with prizes going to the first gross and net low scores. Four-person team sponsors are $240, single players $60 each, and hole sponsorships are $100 each.

The mission of the Literacy Association, which is a nonprofit, United Way agency, is to teach adult illiterate citizens of Cherokee County how to read. About one out of four adults in Cherokee County cannot read or have problems reading simple documents.

The Limestone College baseball team will hold several camps this summer for all ages. The hitting camp will take place on June 12-13 from 9 a.m. until noon. The pitching/ catching camp will be on June 14-15 from 9 a.m. until noon. Day camp will be July 17-20 from 9 a.m. until noon. The hitting and pitching/catching camps each cost

The Board of Public Works team defeated the Upstate Carolina Medical Center squad 11-8 on Tuesday in Babe Ruth Baseball for ages 13 to 15. Kyle Byars' seventh inning solo homer broke a 5-5 tie allowing BPW to get the victory. Tommy Strickland picked up the win in middle relief allowing one run while striking out eight in four innings of work.

Offensively, Jared Teague had three hits (including a double), Josh Moss had three hits, Bubba Wright had two hits (including a double), McCrae Norton had two hits (including a double), Michael Wright had two hits, Kyle Byars had one home run, Tommy Strickland had one hit and Dillon Spencer had one hit.

Hooters of Gastonia/SSO/Rush Energy Drink Softball will have a softball tournament for D and E teams on Saturday, June 3, at Ferguson Park in Gastonia. Entry fee is $155.

The 19th Annual Cherokee County Amateur Golf Championship will be held Saturday, June 24 at Gaffney Country Club and Sunday, June 25 at Cherokee National Golf Club.

Flights will be determined after the first 18 holes Championship A & B, first, Second, Third, Seniors 55-64, Seniors 65 & over. Championship flights will play from blue tees Sunday and Senior flights will play from gold tees Sunday.

There is a $50 entry fee. Practice rounds may be played at either course during week of tourney for cart fee only. Participants can sign up at either club: Gaffney CC4894607; Cherokee National 4899417.

The deadline for signup is 6 p.m., Thursday, June 22 and you can make your own foursome if you wish.
