That scene could be repeated this December if the Indians find adequate replacements for some departed talented running backs.

Gaffney football coach Phil Strickland said rising junior Stephon Foster has shown promise during the recently-completed spring drills.

"He's a good running back," Strickland said. "I think he has his act together now and he is capable of helping us."

Another newcomer, Jeremiah Cochran, appears ready to help in the backfield.

"We have several to pick from," Strickland said.

A healthy offensive line would ease the concerns at running back, but Strickland said some projected starters are still on the mend. Robbie Peterson is still recovering from a torn ACL and tight end Richard Good remains on crutches after ankle surgery.

"The biggest shoes to fill will be on the offensive line," the Gaffney coach said. "We have some young kids who have to grow up in a hurry."

Strickland said starting quarterback Malcolm Long looked sharp during spring drills.

"He has worked hard and is making better decisions," Strickland said.

This season, the Indians will strive for more balance on offense.

"We aren't going to start out with four wideouts," he said. "We will stick to what we were doing late in the season, the play-action stuff."

On defense, Strickland said there are questions along the defensive line and at linebacker heading into fall practice.

"The defensive line may be a question mark," he said. "We are nursing some knee (injuries). But it looks like we have more depth. At linebacker, it looks like we have talent there, but J.B. (Shippy) is the only returning inside linebacker."

"We know we have a lot a work to do," he added. "We are starting at square one. It's just a matter of jelling."
