Candidates nervously anticipate primaries

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Staff Writer larry@gaffneyledger.com

You can believe her when Cherokee County Election Commission Chairman Suzanne Turner admits to having no idea what the voter turnout will be for Tuesday's Democrat and Republican party primaries.

"I really don't have a clue," Turner said.

About 29,000 county residents are eligible to vote Tuesday. If absentee voting precinct is any indication, there won't be a record turnout.

"There hasn't been a lot, but it's been pretty steady," Turner said. "If the weather is good, we'll have more people come out."

The Republican primary ballot is filled with some interesting races, including three locally, Turner said.

Former Ewing Junior High School Principal Marcia Duncan is squaring off against local businessman Danny Stacy for the GOP nomination for the soon-to-be-vacant State House No. 29 seat. The GOP race for the House District 30 seat between former school teacher Libby Swad and local businessman Bobby Beattie is another race that may spur voters to the polls, Turner said.

The spirited battle for coroner, pitting WAGI station manager Dennis Fowler against current deputy coroner Glenn Fuller also has garnered a lot of local attention.

The Democrat party primary ballot is much less crowded, with the battle for the nominee for governor as the only race on the ballot.

When voters enter their polling places, they'll be asked to chose either the Democrat or Republican party primary ballot, Turner said.

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
