The stadium should be completed by August 2007 Bids for the Gaffney High School football stadium project will be opened Oct. 12 at 3 p.m. at the Cherokee County School District office.

The district will open sealed bids at that time from pre-qualified contractors interested in building the 10,000-seat stadium, which will be located between the district office and Gaffney High. The stadium will be constructed of cast-in-place concrete and have aluminum seating.

The stadium was designed by the Spartanburg architectural firm McMillan Smith, which also designed the Dorman High and Wofford College football stadiums.

Several other structures will be built as part of the Gaffney High stadium project, including a team meeting building, halftime buildings, concession stands and restrooms. Construction is expected to begin in October of 2006 with the stadium finished by August of 2007.

The bids do not include the playing surface.

School board chairperson Sandra Greene said the district will award a contract for the stadium construction to begin as soon as possible after the bids are opened.

"We want to have the stadium finished before the next football season," Greene said. "We can't procrastinate."

A pre-bid conference will be held Sept. 26 at the district office for interested bidders.

Cherokee County has followed the lead of other school districts in pre-qualifying contractors and setting minimum criteria they must meet in order to bid on projects in the district's new $45 million school building program.

Six contractors have been pre-qualified to bid on the stadium project, including

Beam Construction Co., Clayton Construction Co., Contract Construction, Edcon Construction, Farley Associates, Randolph Builders and Sossamon Construction Co.
