Council gives final approval to bonuses

Good news for City of Gaffney employees - you'll now be receiving a $1,000 Christmas bonus.

City council on Tuesday unanimously approved on final reading a supplemental budget ordinance that increases employee Christmas bonuses from $500 to $1,000.

When the measure appeared on the agenda at the last council meeting, it also included a steep pay raise for city council members. But that measure was amended to omit council's pay hike from the motion.

A sharply divided Gaffney City Council agreed two months ago to rescind its controversial pay raise on final reading that would have boosted its salaries by nearly 50 percent.

The pay raise would have boosted each council member's salary more than $3,000 from $6,484 to $9,578. Mayor Henry Jolly's salary would have jumped by $3,000 to $11,765. The raises were slated to go into effect after Tuesday's runoff election.

The pay raise proposals drew fire because the new city budget included no across-theboard wage increases for employees.
