LETTER

Candidate clarifies Sossamon's column

Dear Cody:

While reading your editorial on Wednesday, October 11, 2006, I noticed that the statement regarding Bill (James, Superintendent of Cherokee County schools) threatening to pull his support from Habitat, both personal and school district affiliation, were somewhat misquoted. Let me clarify: he did state that he would pull both personal and school support from Habitat for Humanity, but this was in response to the concern that I wanted him to step down from the Habitat for Humanity board of directors after we had some major disagreements. It was my concern that it would affect our ability to work together. It was after the executive committee noted that they required us to continue to work together that I felt it would only hurt Habitat's efforts and, therefore, resigned as Executive Director to keep the negativity from affecting Habitat's mission.

I hope this helps to clarify any misunderstanding as to what exactly it was that initiated Bill's desire to make this statement.
