Big game proceeds: $52,000 for GHS

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

Thanks to playing on FoxSports, the Gaffney High athletic department's wallet is a little fatter today.

Gaffney earned $52,000 for its nationally televised game against Byrnes last Thursday, Gaffney High football coach and athletic director Phil Strickland said.

The amount was based on the number of tickets sold. The school received $35,000 for selling 5,100 tickets for the game. The school got another $5,000 for reaching 8,000 tickets sold, according to the school's contract with FoxSports.

Gaffney also pocketed $12,000 in reserved ticket sales.

"It took a while to negotiate that (contract)," Strickland said.

As for the ticket distribution breakdown, Gaffney received 7,000 and Byrnes got 3,000. Gaffney sold 6,550 general admission tickets, not including its 1,800 reserved seat tickets.

Strickland said he estimates that Byrnes sold about half of its ticket allotment.

Although there is no exact attendance figure, Strickland said he estimates about 10,500 people attended the game.
