HISTORIC SIGN
The new sign installed at The Gaffney Ledger on Friday has historic significance. The 3,000 pound granite stone was part of the steps at the former Gaffney Manufacturing Company, which was recently demolished after ceasing operations. The 'Big Mill' was founded in 1894, the same year The Ledger began publishing under the direction of Edward H. DeCamp, whose likeness is etched into the sign. Shown above (l-r) Albert Lingerfeldt and Louis Blackwelder of L&H Monuments; current Ledger publisher, Cody Sossamon, great-grandson of DeCamp; and David Lingerfeldt. Some of the smaller steps from the mill were used in the reconstruction of Michael Gaffney's log cabin in downtown Gaffney.
