A local man has died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Cherokee Avenue in Gaffney.

Cherokee County Coroner Joe Vinesett said Layton Glenn Mullinax, 45, of 800-B Cherokee Ave., Gaffney, was pronounced dead at 3:51 a.m. Sunday at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Vinesett said Mullinax died of a skull fracture.

Mullinax was struck by the vehicle while walking along Cherokee Avenue at 7:45 p.m. Friday, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol. He was taken by ambulance to UCMC.

Cherokee County Assistant Coroner Glenn Fuller, who owns businesses near the accident site, said he was one of the first to arrive at the scene.

"He'd been to Ozzie's and got an order to go," Fuller said. "He was walking across the street. From what the witnesses say, he just walked out right in front of the car. I understand he had a vision problem. He had no family and lived by himself."
