American Association of University Women (AAUW) Gaffney Branch will meet Monday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. in the education building of the Episcopal Church on College Drive.

Guest speaker will be Shellie Wylie who recently became manager of the Cherokee County American Red Cross. Wylie's topic will deal with being prepared for disasters; she stated that pandemic flu will probably be our next biggest medical threat. Her presentation will also include information for combating seasonal flu.

AAUW's program for the year includes information about women who worked behind the scenes to bring about a better life for us today. Karenna Gore Schiff's book, Lighting the Way: Nine Women Who Changed Modern America, is the basis for the biographical sketches. AAUW member Frances Smith will give a short talk on Mother Jones, the second woman discussed in Schiff's book.

Wylie graduated with honors from Limestone College in 1991 with a degree in accounting. Her background is varied and interesting. She has worked for the U.S. Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. On returning to Gaffney, she was finance director for the City of Gaffney. She has had several years experience in non-profit and service work.

Prior to accepting the Red Cross position, she enjoyed working in the Music Foundation at the Arts Center in Spartanburg. In addition to her Red Cross position, Wylie recently opened her own business.

Membership in AAUW is based on having either an associate or a baccualaureate degree from an accredited college or university. Anyone interested in attending the meeting or finding out more about the organization should call the membership chairman at 489- 2394.
