Shippy and defensive teammates spark victory

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

J.B. SHIPPY J.B. SHIPPY Gaffney's J.B. Shippy couldn't be stopped and the Indians simply couldn't lose on Friday against Colleton County.

The junior linebacker had another standout performance with a couple of sacks and a blocked punt recovery.

Shippy and his defensive teammates held Colleton County to just 96 total yards, including (-)46 on the ground.

"The game plan was to stop the speed sweep they had," Shippy said. "They ran that and some out routes."

While Shippy was roaming sideline to sideline to stop the sweep, cornerbacks Kendrick Tate and Kelin Morris were blanketing the Cougars' talented wide receivers.

"Kendrick got the interception and Morris held down everything," Shippy said. "They did a great job."

Colleton County quarterback

Zach Singleton completed just 11 of his 29 throws for 142 yards.

Shippy said he and his teammates are just having fun this season.

"The defense sparks things," he said. "We love to be on the field."

Shippy also was a force on special teams, recovering a blocked punt that led to a touchdown.

"Me and Garrett (Bridges) did a little stunt and he got back there and got it," he said. "I tripped over my own feet (when I recovered it)."

With a matchup with Byrnes looming, Shippy said the key to the game will be to pressure Rebel quarterback Willy Korn.

"We just want to put as much pressure as possible," he said. "It'll probably be the same game plan ... just hit hard."
