County residents can help provide a merry Christmas for underprivileged children through The Gaffney Ledger's annual fundraiser "Christmas Is For Kids."

The Ledger is now accepting donations for this year's campaign. For every $100 raised, a child is taken on a shopping spree to select toys and clothes for Christmas.

Children received help in making their selections last year from members of the Altrusa Club and Sub Deb of Gaffney, a community service organization for high school girls. Sub Deb had 10 club members and two adult sponsors volunteer to help last year.

"It was a good experience for the girls to assist the children. There were a lot of touching moments," said Debbie Vaughan, one of the sponsors of Sub Deb. "The kids weren't just picking out clothes and toys for themselves. They would see something and ask, 'Can I get this for my mom?' All the girls left that morning and said, 'We have got to do this again.'"

Children are selected by the Department of Social Services, the Salvation Army and the Cherokee County Disabilities and Special Needs Board. Since 1989, the annual fundraiser has helped an estimated 1,600 children have Christmas gifts.

The Ledger will be accepting donations to "Christmas Is For Kids" through Dec. 31.

All donations are tax deductible.

Donations can be sent to "Christmas Is For Kids" c/o The Gaffney Ledger, P.O. Box 670, Gaffney, S.C. 29342; or brought by The Ledger at 1604 W. Floyd Baker Blvd.
