Couple donates bicycles to local children's home

"Now I can afford to give something back.... We try to help when we can and do what we can. It's not just us, it's a lot of people. I call them and tell them what I'm doing and they help." - J.P. Jones

Christmas came early when seven bicycles were delivered to the Cherokee Children's Home on Monday.

The bikes were donated by J.P. and Brenda Jones of Early Morning Express Trucking Company in Gaffney. Joe Craig of Logan Street Towing delivered the bicycles.

"They really have a heart for the Children's Home," said Sandra Miller, volunteer coordinator for the Cherokee Children's Home. "They've helped us in the past."

Miller, who also coordinates donations made to the home, said the Joneses have also helped in other areas, like providing the timbers for the playground area at the facility.

For J.P. Jones, a California native who was orphaned at age 10, helping the Children's Home is something close to his heart.

"I grew up in places like that and it only took one or two people to make a difference in my life," he said. "Now I can afford to give something back.... We try to help when we can and do what we can. It's not just us, it's a lot of people. I call them and tell them what I'm doing and they help."

The children's home is also in desperate need of someone to repair the older bikes.

"I've called around and can't find anybody to work on them," J.P. Jones said.

Jones said he is going to work on a few of the bicycles when his grandchildren visit over the Christmas holiday to help teach them how to fix their own bikes.

"We just try to do whatever they need every Christmas, whether it's bikes or a tree," said Brenda Jones.
