Community events

The Ladies Progressive Club will sponsor its annual Jack and Jill contest today, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. at B.D. Lee Elementary School, 401 Overbrook Drive. Four girls and one boy are vying for the titles of Little Jack and Little Jill. The program will present several young boys and girls in the production of "A Merry Christmas" for entertainment. There is no admission charge and the public is invited to attend.

Support groups

AA meetings are held at 8 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday in the building behind Limestone Methodist Church on Carlisle Street. If you have a problem with alcohol, you are welcome to attend.

Fund raisers

The Blacksburg Volunteer Fire Department will have a pinto bean fund raiser at the fire station on Friday, Dec. 8, from 10 a.m. until. All-youcan eat plates are $5 and include beans, cornbread, slaw and fixin's. Call 864-839- 6061 for more information.

Education news

Blacksburg High School will present its annual financial aid workshop Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. Bobby Holcombe, director of financial aid at USC-Union, will offer information on completing the 2007-2008 FAFSA and give updated information on the Palmetto, LIFE and HOPE scholarships, Lottery Tuition Assistance Program, S.C. Teacher's Loan and various other type of financial opportunities. The workshop is open to the public and will take place in the BHS cafeteria.

Classes

A general caregiving skills class will be held Tuesday, Dec. 5, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the American Red Cross Service Center, 301 N. Limestone St. Participants will learn the basic skills to care for a sick loved one at home. Pre-registration is required. To register and for more information, call 864-489-6066.
