GHS senior selected student correspondent for Shrine Bowl Gaffney may have only sent one of its football players to the Shrine Bowl, but Kelin Morris will not be the only Gaffney High student involved. Senior Derek Phillips was selected to the all-star game as the first-ever student correspondent. He will represent the South Carolina team as a sports writer. His articles will be published in the Shrine Bowl newspaper and area newspapers, including The Gaffney Ledger. "It's a very special honor to receive this award because not only am I representing my high school, I'm also representing my friends, family and the entire state," said Phillips. He will be joining Morris in Spartanburg Dec. 9-16. While there, Phillips will be involved with the athletes during the week. "It's going to be a very exciting week. I've met with the directors and they are happy to have me as a part of their organization." Phillips is very involved with journalism. He is in his third year with the broadcast journalism program at Gaffney High. Also, he and his father, Scott Phillips, run a Gaffney Indian Sports website (www. g a f f n e y i n d i a n - sports.net) dedicated to the athletes and coaches at Gaffney High School. His father takes pictures while Scott and his friend, Dustin Martin, write recaps on athletic events at the high school. "Derek has been a member of the Gaffney High broadcast team for three years. This opportunity with the Shrine Bowl will allow him to explore other areas of media before heading to college next fall to major in communication," said Julia Bowman, Broadcast Journalism teacher at GHS. Phillips hopes to attend the University of South Carolina next year. |
