SSgt. Samuel Harris Jr.
Retired U.S. Army veteran
SSgt. Samuel Harris Jr., 72, of 300 Block of West 30th St., Norfolk, Va., died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2006, in Cleveland Regional Medical Center, Shelby.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the widower of Margaret Harris and son of the late Samuel Harris Sr. and the late Honey Davis Harris. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Carrie Elmore, Lillie Mae Fair and Eunice Outlaw. SSgt. Harris was a retired veteran of the U.S. Army, having
served in Korea and
Vietnam. After retiring from military service, he was employed as a detective at the Norfolk Naval Base. He was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, where he was an aspiring minister, and was a member of King David Lodge 615.
Surviving are a daughter, Barbara L. McCoy of Norfolk; three sons, Samuel Harris II, Anthony Bernard Harris and Anthony Harris; a sister, Johnsie Harris Goodwin of Gaffney; a special nephew and niece, James Goodwin of Gaffney and Linda Holloman of Norfolk; a special friend, Earline Youngblood of Shelby; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 5, at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church with Bishop C. Varnie Russell officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Roosevelt Memorial Park.
Viewing will be today from 2-8 p.m. at Riddick Funeral Service, Norfolk and the family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
