After big win, Wildcats fall to Broome
By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

Blacksburg’s Antonio Bolin takes a shot against Broome on Thursday.
Josh Butler is making a habit of hitting big shots. But Broome made sure he wouldn’t get the chance in the opening round of the Sub Station II holiday tournament on Thursday.

Butler, who hit the game-winner against Chapman last week and made the clinching basket to beat homestanding Woodruff, 67- 64, on Wednesday, scored just 10 points in the Wildcats’ 77-40 loss to Broome. Blacksburg will meet Chapman in the consolation game at 6 p.m. today.

Blacksburg coach Travis Miller said his team had little left for Broome after its big region win over Woodruff just 24 hours earlier.

“(Woodruff) was a very emotional game,” he said. “To play a team the caliber of Broome was tough.”

Antwone Glenn had 17 points to pace the Centurions, who led 16-11 at the end of the first quarter.

The Centurions took advantage of the Wildcats’ six-plus minute scoring drought in the second quarter to build a 32-11 cushion.

Josh Elmore finally put the Wildcats on the board with a three-pointer with 1:30 left before halftime.

The Wildcats were also hurt when Butler and leading scorer Antonio Bolin went to the bench after being whistled for their third foul midway through the second quarter.

Against Woodruff, Butler finished with a team-high 19 points and Bolin had 18 for the Wildcats, who improved to 2-0 in the region.

Woodruff had a chance to tie the game but the Wildcats stole the inbounds pass to wrap up the win.

The Wolverines erased an early-deficit to take a 2-point lead at the half.
