BRIEFS

Dorman tops

Lady Indians

Dorman outscored the Gaffney Lady Indians, 25-12, in the second quarter, to take a 69-35 victory on Wednesday. The Lady Indians fall to 0-2 in the region.

Gaffney lost its region opener to Byrnes, 76-48, last Friday.

Breanna Watkins had a team high 16 points, while Shelise Ratchford added 11 and Tiffany Dukes had 9.

“We fell behind early in the game and could not make up the difference,” Gaffney coach Matt Gibson said. “We are not playing good defensively right now whether we play a zone or man to man. We are not a team that will be able to outscore an opponent with just our offensive abilities. We are going to have to play a good defensive game in order to give us an opportunity to win.

“As a coaching staff, we see improvement but we need to be able carry what we do in practice to the game court and also be able to focus and play hard the entire game not just in spurts here and there.”

Lady Wildcats

fall to 0-2 in region

Woodruff improved to 2-0 in the region with an 81-38 win over the visiting Blacksburg Lady Wildcats. Woodruff jumped to an 11-point lead at the end of the first quarter to cruise to the easy win.

Clemson cornerback

charged

Clemson starting cornerback Duane Coleman was charged with simple possession of marijuana following a traffic stop.

The 23-year-old Coleman, of Naples, Fla., was arrested Wednesday afternoon when a small amount of marijuana was found in his car, Seneca police said in a news release. He was held overnight at the Oconee County jail and was released Thursday on a personal recognizance bond.

Coleman was stopped for failing to use a turn signal and the arresting officer smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle, police said.

Seneca is about 7 miles from Clemson’s campus.

Clemson plays Kentucky in the Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tenn., on Dec. 29. Coleman emerged as one of the Tigers’ defensive leaders after moving from tailback midway through his junior season, and was fourth on the team this year with 81 tackles.

Coach Tommy Bowden would address any suspension or discipline after meeting with Coleman, athletic spokesman Tim Bourret said.

Coleman was scheduled to graduate Thursday.

Delhomme misses

practice again

Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme missed practice again Thursday with his sprained right thumb, making it likely he’ll miss his third straight game.

Delhomme hasn’t played or practiced since suffering ligament damage in his right thumb on Dec. 4 at Philadelphia. Chris Weinke started in his place in losses to the New York Giants and Pittsburgh, and will probably start again on Sunday at Atlanta.

Weinke practiced Thursday, despite being added to the injury report as probable with a sore chest.

Receiver Drew Carter (ankle) and tight end Kris Mangum (hip) missed practice for a second straight day and remain listed as questionable.

Punt returner Taye Biddle (knee) returned to practice after missing Wednesday’s workout. He remains listed as questionable.

Police arrest Willis

on drunken driving

Florida Marlins pitcher Dontrelle Willis was arrested early Friday on a drunken driving charge, police said.

An officer saw the star get out of his black Bentley around 4:30 a.m. and urinate in the street, police spokesman Bobby Hernandez said. The officer then approached him, noticed signs of intoxication and arrested him, Hernandez said.
