Indians jayvees

improve to 12-0

Jeff Brown scored 19 points as the Gaffney junior varsity basketball team improved to 12-0 with a 51-35 win at Boiling Springs on Friday.

The Indians trailed 5-0 in the early going but had a 10-point lead at the

break.

Lady Indians fall to Boiling Springs

Doristine Norris scored 16 points and Breanna Watkins added 12 but it wasn't enough to prevent the Lady Indians from dropping to 0-3 in the region with a 73-59 loss at Boiling Springs on Friday.

Boiling Springs led 13-11 at the end of the first quarter and 29-27 at the break. Watkins' three-pointer pulled the Lady Indians within 50-49 with 5:40 left in the game, but the Lady Bulldogs regained the momentum with a 7-0 run.

"We played well, but we had some mental lapses for three or four minutes," Gaffney coach Matt Gibson said. "We played hard. (Boiling Springs) is one of the top three teams in the region, so this was a good showing for us."

Saint wrestlers

place 13th

The Limestone wrestling team finished 13th out of 24 teams at the Midwest Classic. Limestone's Dan Scanlan finished third in the 184 lb. class and Trey Moss placed fourth in the 285-lb. division.

Patriots top

Jets, 37-16

Bill Belichick and Tom Brady won three Super Bowls with Eric Mangini on their side.

The Patriots coach taught his former student that maybe he can win another without him - especially with his quarterback in championship form.

Brady capped long scoring drives with short touchdown passes to Daniel Graham and Kevin Faulk, and Asante Samuel sealed it with a 36-yard interception return for a score with 4:54 left as New England beat Mangini's New York Jets 37-16 on Sunday.

''We keep playing like that, we can make it a long ways,'' wide receiver Reche Caldwell said.

New England (13-4), the only team to win a playoff game in each of the last four seasons, will play at AFC top seed San Diego (14-2) next Sunday. The Patriots are going for their fourth Super Bowl title in six seasons.

Akers kicks

Eagles to win

Some of his teammates couldn't watch David Akers when he lined up for the winning kick, preferring to let the crowd's reaction tell them the outcome.

Given recent events around the NFL, nobody could blame them.

The fans' roar gave them the news - snap, hold and kick were perfect this time.

Akers hit a 38-yard field goal with no time remaining to give the Philadelphia Eagles a 23-20 victory over the New York Giants in a wildcard playoff game Sunday.

A day after Dallas lost to Seattle when quarterback Tony Romo fumbled the hold on what could have been a go-ahead field goal, snapper Jon Dorenbos and holder Koy Detmer executed the seemingly routine play that has cost teams important games in recent weeks.

Louisville coach

takes Falcons job

From his very first year at Louisville, Bobby Petrino's name kept coming up for other coaching jobs.

On Sunday, he finally decided it was time to go. Petrino left the Cardinals to become head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, who needed less than a week to find a replacement for Jim Mora.

After firing Mora, who never seemed to get the most out of Michael Vick's enormous potential, the Falcons went with a coach who guided high-scoring Louisville to a 12-1 season.
