Tennis, anyone?
Seven internationals say 'yes' to Limestone

      Paulo Avila traveled from his home in Brazil last weekend to begin his college education and play tennis at Limestone College this spring. Avila, a freshman from Rio de Janiero, spent Tuesday completing the enrollment process and working on his English-speaking skills. He studied engineering for two years in Brazil and plans to major in business administration at Limestone College.

Bloodhounds lose trail of suspect

      Cherokee County Sheriff's Department deputies and the Bloodhound Tracking Team responded to an armed robbery at 8:40 p.m. Saturday at Mr. Petro, 608 Hampshire Drive, Gaffney, a report at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office states.

Ice, coke and pot seized in Thursday raid

      The Cherokee County Metro Narcotics Unit seized 131 grams of ice methamphetamine during a raid at a Gaffney home at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, a report at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office states.

SOUPER GRANT
      The Gaffney Soup Kitchen received a $1,000 holiday grant from Wal-Mart on Friday. Pictured are Wal-Mart representative Jackie Moniouk and Gaffney Soup Kitchen acting treasurer Wofford Caughmann. Local residents are encouraged to help the Soup Kitchen by participating in this year's Souper Bowl of Caring on Feb. 4.

Students revving up calculators

      When you start talking about mathematics at Mary Bramlett Elementary School, you're just as likely to hear engines revving as you are to hear calculators clicking. At least, that's the case now that the faculty has embraced a new program they've dubbed, "Math for Boys" that utilizes striking new approaches to get males at the school interested in math.

Maybe it was a sign
      A Gaffney woman was driving past Kimbrell's Furniture when part of a sign at the business fell and damaged her vehicle, a report at the Gaffney Police Department states. The 66-year-old woman told police she was traveling north on Limestone Street at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when one of the letters fell off the building at 502 N. Limestone St., Gaffney, and struck her 2005 Hyundai Tucson.

Completes requirements
      Michelle Harris of Gastonia recently completed requirements for North Carolina Certification/Licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Harris is employed by Pathways as a clinician. Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Harris of Gaffney, she graduated in May, 2003, with a Master of Social Work from the University of South Carolina.

Gospel concert Jan. 27 to benefit J.R. Davidson
      There will be a benefit concert for J.R. Davidson in Gaffney High School Auditorium on Saturday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. Davidson, who has been a patient at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center since November, 2006, is the son of Robert and Donna Davidson of Gaffney. He is a musician who has served many churches and choirs in the area as minister of music.
