Tyson Petty will apparently be staying close to home to play in college.

Petty made a verbal commitment to Gardner- Webb during his visit to the Boiling Springs, N.C., school, according to sources close to the situation. Verbal commitments are non-binding.

Petty was also considering Western Carolina and Newberry. Petty, who was selected to play in the North-South All-Star Game, had 71 receptions for 1,550 yards this season. He also caught 13 touchdown passes.

Several other Gaffney Indians are also mulling over offers.

Another offensive spark plug for the team, wideout Terry Barnes, has an offer from Virginia Union.

Shrine Bowl cornerback Kelin Morris has scholarship offers from Winston-Salem State and Virginia Union.

Outside linebacker Garrett Bridges is mulling over offers from Wofford as well as some other schools.

Tight end Richard Good is likely headed for Hutcherson Junior College in Kansas.

Quarterback Malcolm Long, the state's Mr. Football, will choose among South Carolina State, Mars Hill, Western Carolina and Gardner- Webb. A junior college in Mississippi has also shown interest in Long.

For his career, the quarterback has completed 415 of his 745 throws for 6,437 yards and 63 touchdowns.
