Lawson leaves for Laurens High

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

GREG LAWSON GREG LAWSON In his stint as offensive coordinator, Greg Lawson turned the Gaffney Indians offense into one of the most potent in the state.

He'll try to do the same as head coach at Laurens High School.

Lawson replaces J.R. Boyd, who resigned after two years on the job. The Raiders qualified for the playoffs twice under Boyd.

Under Lawson, the Indians averaged 33 points and 365 yards of total offense a game. Lawson joined the Indians in 2003 after a stint as quarterbacks coach at Union High School.

Two years ago, Lawson applied for the South Pointe High School head coaching job but pulled his name from consideration.

"He will surely be missed," Gaffney head coach Phil Strickland said. "He was ready to become a head coach."

Lawson's replacement will likely come from the current staff.

"I'll look from within first to find the right person," Strickland said.

Strickland said no matter who becomes the new offensive coordinator don't look for major changes on offense.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it," the Gaffney coach said.

Attempts to reach Lawson by cell phone were unsuccessful.
