S.C. lawmaker proposes legalizing medical marijuana use
By JIM DAVENPORT Associated Press Writer
      COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A state senator whose first wife suffered a painful death wants the state to legalize medical marijuana use. Sen. Bill Mescher of Pinopolis says the issue has been on his mind for about 20 years. ''My first wife died of lung cancer - a long agonizing death,'' the Republican lawmaker said.

Gaffney delegates to convene
      Approximately 100 delegates from the Gaffney area will convene for a two-day gathering of Jehovah's Witnesses for religious instruction Jan. 20-21 at Assembly Hall, 3401 Old Concord Road, Salisbury, N.C. The program will highlight the theme, "Store Up Treasures in Heaven.

Former U.S. ambassador to discuss Russian policy January 30 at USC
      COLUMBIA - Richard Miles, former United States ambassador to Georgia and Azerbaijan, will discuss Russian policy in a public talk Tuesday, Jan. 30, at the University of South Carolina. Miles' talk, "Russia's Evolving Role in the Caucasus," will take place at 3:30 p.m. in Lumpkin Auditorium, located on the eighth floor of the Moore School of Business. The event is free and open to the public.
