Teen pregnancy prevention program presented to First Baptist youth group

      Go A.P.E. is the memorable name for a teenage pregnancy prevention curriculum aimed at encouraging teenagers to avoid having sex until after marriage. More than 80 youth group members at First Baptist Church were encouraged Wednesday evening to make good decisions during a Go A.P.E. program presented by Edward Surratt, project director for the Cherokee County Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy.

Local woman named to state board
      Judy Nix, director of development for the Cherokee Children's Home, has been elected president of the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Association of Children's Homes and Family Services. The association has approximately 45-member agencies from across the state. Nix has served in several capacities on the board in the past.

Man faces multiple charges

      Police said a Gaffney man set fire to the house he was living in when Cherokee County Sheriff's Department deputies arrived Thursday to question him about an assault. Deputy Steve Bright said George Tuck, 46, saw him when the officer arrived at Tuck's home at 124 Nellie's Road in Corinth at 1:25 p.m. to question him.

Sen. Peeler recommends two to replace magistrate

      Senator Harvey Peeler has recommended Steven S. Wood of Gaffney and James Baker Leigh of Blacksburg become part-time magistrates. "Senator Peeler contacted me about the nomination earlier this week," Wood said. "I'm very excited about the job and I look forward to serving my community.

Sheriff issues scam alert

      Two elderly women told police two suspicious men posing as utility workers have tried to enter their homes. Police refer to these scammers as "distraction thieves." Cherokee County Sheriff Bill Blanton issued a press release Monday warning local residents that these thieves are back in the area again.

77-year-old Blacksburg homeowner shoots at burglary suspects
      A Blacksburg homeowner fired three shots while two burglary suspects were running from his home at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday, a report at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office states. Police have charged R.J. Osborne, 19, and his brother, Ronald Franklin Osborne Jr., 20, both of 103 Maxine Lane, Blacksburg, each with 2nddegree burglary.
