AAUW meeting highlights integration in local schools
The Gaffney Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will have a luncheon meeting Monday, Feb. 12, at noon at the House of Pizza on East Frederick Street.
Integration in Cherokee County schools took place almost 40 years ago in the fall of 1968. "Integration's Early Days in Cherokee County" will be reviewed through the eyes of two black Cherokee County teachers, Frances Smith, who taught at Central Elementary School, and Naomi Stanley, who taught biology at Gaffney High School.
The program was conceived to highlight Black History Month and to celebrate integration's four decades in Cherokee County schools.
AAUW's agenda for the year includes biographical information about women who worked behind the scenes to bring about a better life for us today as presented in Karenna Gore Schiff's book, Lighting the Way: Nine Women Who Changed Modern America. AAUW member Mildred Finch will give a short talk about Alice Hamilton who worked for regulation of industrial chemicals and for workers' compensation.
The meeting is open to the public. However, since space is limited, call 489-2394 for reservations.
