Mother says 12-year-old son was beaten while on school bus
The mother of a 12-year-old male student told police a 16- year-old male student beat him while he was riding home on a school bus, a report at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office states.
She told deputies the attack was taped on the school bus' video camera, the report states. She said the 16-year-old approached her son from the back of the bus and began hitting him on the back of the head. The 16-year-old then moved into the aisle and continued beating her son, causing injuries to the boy's jaw and face and bruises to his head, according to the report.
The alleged assault occurred on Goucher Green Bethel Road in Gaffney at 4 p.m. Tuesday, the report states.
Shoplifting suspects lead police on chase
A shoplifting call at the Dollar General, 1309 W. Floyd Baker Blvd., Gaffney, led to a police chase that covered approximately three miles and began at 5:38 p.m. Wednesday, a report at the Gaffney Police Department states.
Vashon Ward Sarratt, 32, of 705 Davis St., Gaffney, is charged with 3rd or subsequent offense shoplifting and Tyson Jerrard Sarratt, 19, of Boiling Springs, is charged with reckless driving.
While Officer Tommy Kennedy of the Gaffney Police Department was responding to the Dollar General, he saw a black BMW that a shoplifting suspect had used to flee from the store. When Kennedy turned his patrol car around to follow the vehicle, the BMW driver turned onto Marion Avenue and continued to lead police on a three-mile chase.
The driver pulled over at a daycare facility on Providence Road, where the passenger, identified by police as Vashon Sarratt, jumped from the vehicle and fled. He was apprehended a short time later by other city and county police units.
Kennedy continued to pursue the vehicle for another quarter of a mile before Tyson Sarratt stopped and surrendered.
Police said $176 in clothing was stolen from the store.
Man faces second
offense drug charge
Police seized approximately 6.5 grams of marijuana from a Gaffney man at 10:20 p.m. Tuesday, a report at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office states.
Agent Jerry Smith of the Cherokee County Metro Narcotics Unit has charged Thomas Arnold Gregory, 27, of 206 Third Ave., Gaffney, with 2nd or subsequent offense simple possession of marijuana.
Gregory was at a residence at 204 Oak Street in Gaffney when he was arrested. He had the bag of marijuana in his right front pants pocket, the report states.
Man faces third
shoplifting charge
A Gaffney man has been arrested for allegedly stealing merchandise from Bi-Lo, 1013 W. Floyd Baker Blvd., Gaffney, on Jan. 7.
Officer J.S. Blackwell of the Gaffney Police Department has charged Richard Pete Wood, 43, of 417 Suez St., Gaffney, with third or subsequent offense shoplifting.
Wood has been at the Cherokee County Detention Center since Jan. 7 after being ticketed for shoplifting, but was served Tuesday with a new warrant after authorities discovered he had prior shoplifting convictions, police said.
Wood has also been served with a Family Court bench warrant.
Man charged with
leaving the scene
Gaffney Police Officer Brian Blanton has charged William Thomas Allen Jr. of 1171 W. Rutledge Ave., Gaffney, with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.
According to an arrest warrant at the Gaffney Police Department, Allen left the scene of a traffic accident Monday without providing authorities with the information required. The warrant was served Tuesday.
AC units stolen
from warehouse
Two air conditioning units worth $10,000 were stolen from Industrial Mini Storage, 101 Beaver Dam Road, Gaffney, a report at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office states.
The units were stolen between Jan. 15 and 25. One is a 2-ton Rudd unit and the other is a 3-ton Bryant unit.
Copper wiring
stolen from plant
Approximately $6,100 worth of copper wiring was stolen from Hamrick's Plant No. 5, 178 Hyatt St., Gaffney, a report at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office states.
Different size wiring was taken from the plant between Monday, Jan. 29, and Tuesday, Jan. 30.
