Brookview celebrates outstanding DHEC survey Brookview Healthcare Center began the New Year with visitors arriving the week after Christmas. DHEC arrived at the facility on Jan. 24 and the final day of their visit came with great news for all of the staff at Brookview. DHEC left on Jan. 30 with the results of their survey in the hands of the department managers. Brookview was cited with eight deficiencies, but the final results of the 2,567 arrived this week with one of the citations lifted. The deficiencies included an over-thecounter medicine (fish oil) that was not given to a patient timely, a pace maker check was not given because the patient was out to the hospital, catheter care procedure was observed by one surveyor who felt the C.N.A. tugged on the catheter during the procedure. A wound care order remained on the Physician Order sheet for two months. (The wound care was not transcribed on the treatment record because there was not wound to treat.) There were three citations in care plans/MDS, which is basically a paper tag, related to care plans not being signed in a timely manner. Susan Sain, administrator of the facility, said, "I am very proud of the staff here at Brookview and I feel they should be celebrating. I am a former North Carolina surveyor and the staff here is outstanding. Although we would like to have zero deficiencies, the deficiencies received were not considered life threatening and were not widespread throughout the facility. We are hoping for a desk review and do not anticipate any fines." Brookview Healthcare is managed by Palmetto Healthcare Inc. based in Florida. The building itself is owned by Frank and Larry Sossamon whose parents opened the facility in 1967. Since that time Brookview has reached out to the community to take care of the frail and elderly. |
