Man robbed while riding bicycle

      A Gaffney man claims he was the victim of a strongarm robbery while riding his bicycle in Blacksburg. James Nesbitt Jenkins, 29, of 118 Monticello St., told police he was riding his bicycle at 100 Bolin Road on Saturday at 12:30 a.m. when a truck pulled up alongside him, according to an incident report on file at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department.

Gaffney Middle students supporting St. Jude's

      Gaffney Middle School students will put their math problem solving skills to the test Tuesday with the kickoff of a fundraiser for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. The 700 Gaffney Middle students will join many schools nationwide in participating in the 27th annual Math-A-Thon.

State's unemployment rate ranks No. 2 in nation
      (AP) - South Carolina's unemployment rate dropped slightly in January to 6.4 percent, but was the second-worst figure in the nation, officials said Thursday. The January rate dropped from December's 6.5 percent, which was still well above the national rate of 4.6 percent.

Local students recognized for achievement
      The United States Achievement Academy has announced that Antonio Parker and Uqawla S. Dawkins of Gaffney have been recognized for academic achievement as United States National Honor Student Award winners. The Ewing Middle School students will appear in the United States Achievement Academy official yearbook, which is published nationally.

Blacksburg student honored by U.S. Achievement Academy
      The United States Achievement Academy has announced that Tia Smith of Blacksburg has been recognized for academic achievement as a United States National Honor Student Award winner. Smith, who attends Blacksburg Middle School, will appear in the United States Achievement Academy official yearbook, which is published nationally.

Riverbanks extends weekend hours
      COLUMBIA - Visitors to Riverbanks Zoo and Garden will an extra hour every Saturday and Sunday through mid- September. The change coincides with the revised daylight savings schedule, allowing Riverbanks to remain open until 6 p.m. on the weekends a little earlier this year.

      The Cherokee County Republican Women's Club is seeking nominations for the Republican Women's Volunteer Community Service Award for 2007. The award is presented to a person who has volunteered at any service organization (Children's Home, Cherokee Literacy Association, Meals on Wheels, Soup Kitchen, Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross, etc.

School district's 'Fine Arts Expo' set for March 15
      Cherokee County students will be the main attraction at the district's annual Fine Arts Expo March 15th at Gaffney High School. This year's audience will see the first performance of the Gaffney Area Middle School Honor Band. The Honor Band consists of students from each Gaffney area middle school (Granard, Ewing, and Gaffney Middle).
