Says 'no-kill'shelter is impossible ... unless

Dear Editor:

I'm writing in response to the article about the Cherokee County Animal Shelter.

Instead of a no-kill shelter, money could be better spent on pay raises for the code enforcement officers.

Seems two Gaffney women "animal activists" want to make the shelter a "no kill" shelter. One of these women who would like to see a director named for the shelter used to be the director. In my opinion, she couldn't get the job done she's asking for, so how does she expect someone else to? I'm an animal lover myself. Animals can be good companions and obedient friends if treated properly. If they end up in the shelter then someone wasn't a responsible owner. If these two women think there is lack of management at the shelter, then why do they not volunteer their help at the shelter.

In my opinion, having a "no kill" shelter is impossible unless you're just going to pick and choose which animals are brought in there because some of these animals are dangerous or so sick it would be more humane to put them down.

Another thing is we do have a leash law. I think irresponsible owners should be given stiffer fines for not obeying it. I also think the code enforcement officers should get pay raises. They put themselves in danger picking up neglected animals because of irresponsible owners who can't or won't take care of their pets. I think the decision to put these animals down should be left up to the code enforcement officers.

These officers do not enjoy having to put animals down. But they do protect the public from vicious animals and put themselves at risk of getting hurt.

As far as putting animals down, I think they do their best with what they have to work with. It would be good to make certain we have someone with CET certification, also known as certified euthanization technician, followed by the skills of checking heartbeat and proper knowledge of reflexes to make sure the animal is completely expired. I also do feel that kids should be supervised when visiting the shelter and that warning signs should be posted. Angela Sanders     Gaffney, SC
