School district checking into ownership of property

By SCOTT POWELL Ledger Staff Writer spowell@gaffneyledger.com

A Cherokee County School District property might change hands, provided the school district still owns the land.

Galilee Baptist Church recently approached Blacksburg school trustee Donnie Lee Smith about the possibility of acquiring a four acre tract located across from Highway 29 near Kelly's Steakhouse. Smith estimates the district has owned the property for 50 years.

"Galilee Baptist Church is growing fast and has outgrown their current space. The church is interested in whether the district would be willing to donate or sell the property," Smith told school trustees at Tuesday night's board meeting. "It's my understanding that the school district intended to donate this property to another community group about 20 years ago. The deed to the property never changed hands for whatever reason."

Smith asked the district administration to determine if it still has a clear deed to the property.

Once the school district learns the status of the property, Smith said the school board will then be in a position to decide whether the district can consider the request to donate and/or sell the tract.
