YMCA hosts

all-star Saturday

The YMCA finished its basketball season March 3 with All-Star Saturday.

The event featured free throw and 3-point shooting contests. Participation awards were given to all of the players.

In the Biddyball Division, Torien Oglesby won the free throw compeition. In the Intermediate Division, Keon McCallum won the free throw contest and A'Brea Ratchford won the 3-point shooting event. Tevin Shears won the free throw and 3- point contests in the youth division.

The regular season wrapped up with a game on March 1. The Clear View Window Tinting Saints (MVPs Kellon Stanley and Bryce Spurlin) defeated the Sanders Brothers Knights (MVP Andrew Hinchliffe).

Program Director Danny Higgins said the YMCA like to would like to thank the sponsors for making the 2007 season possible, including Blakely Funeral Home, Timken, Elk's Club, ACE Hardware, Cline Brandt Kochenower, Hamrick's Kids, The Party Place, WAGI 105.3, Daddy Joe's, Sanders Brothers, Clearview Window Tinting, Correll Insurance, The House of Pizza.

The Limestone softball team split a doubleheader Thursday. Anderson won the first game, 2-1. Limestone won the nightcap, 3-1.

Former commissioner

dies at 80

Former commissioner Bowie Kuhn, who lorded over baseball during 15 tumultuous years that saw players gain free agency and start the spiral of multimillion-dollar salaries, died. He was 80.

Kuhn died at St. Luke's Hospital following a short illness, said his spokesman Bob Wirz.

When Kuhn took over as commissioner from William Eckert on Feb. 4, 1969, baseball just had completed its final season as a tradition-bound 20-team sport with no playoffs, a reserve clause and an average salary of about $19,000.

Sosa's comeback

moves forward

Sammy Sosa's comeback took another step forward when he was told he would be added to the Texas Rangers' 40-man roster.

The 38-year-old slugger, fifth on the career home run list, has a hit in all 10 spring training games in which he's played.

Track club

to meet March 17

The Gaffney Elite Track Club will meet Saturday, March 17, at 5 p.m. at the Beltline Center. All participants are urged to attend.
