A North Carolina man who wrecked his vehicle Saturday on Highway 18 died of natural causes which led to the accident, according to Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler.
Fowler said George Allen Case, 56, of Tryon, N.C., had a medical problem prior to the traffic accident and the accident was not a contributing factor in his death.
Case, whose body showed no signs of serious injuries from the crash, had a heart condition and his death has been ruled natural, the coroner said.
Case was traveling alone in a Chevrolet S-10 pickup north on Highway 18, about a half mile south of Gaffney near Mack's Barber Shop, when a witness said his vehicle started to travel off the left side of the road. The pickup went up a slight embankment, struck a tree and turned onto its side.
Case was taken by ambulance to Upstate Carolina Medical Center, where he died.
He was wearing a seat belt and was traveling 40 mph in a 45 mph speed zone, authorities said.
The S.C. Highway Patrol also investigated the accident but the death is not considered a traffic related fatality.
