Sorority will select new officers at April meeting Xi Alpha Delta chapter of Beta Sigma Phi held its monthly meeting on March 5 at Magnolia's of Gaffney with 14 members present. After the Greek roll call and the opening ritual, the secretary, Patty Greene, read the minutes from the February meeting. President Libby Reed asked for reports from the officers and all committees. On the social calendar for March, members will attend the TLC dinner at First Baptist Church on March 20. The social next month will be the Founder's Day dinner April 30 at the home of member Ruth Ann Ohlsen. For May, Libby Reed will host a cookout for members with family and friends. Members voted to purchase flowers to be planted at Magnolia's of Gaffney as the service project for April. Shirley Turner had a report about the heaters that the sorority bought for the February service project. President Reed reminded members that they will be voting on Woman of the Year and Program of the Year at the April meeting. Also, new officers will be nominated and voted on. The meeting will be at the home of Frances Sanders on April 2 at 7 p.m. Member Fran Kerr presented a program about a friend, Dolly Spencer, who is an Eskimo and lived in Alaska. As a child, Mrs. Spencer learned to use seal skin and animal tendons to make clothes. In 1945, she moved to Nome and learned to make dolls that represented the hunters and fishermen of her heritage. She became well known for her dolls and was invited three times to the National Arts Festival of Anchorage Museum. In 1986, her dolls were selected for the Smithsonian Museum. One of her dolls sold for $10,000. After the closing ritual, members enjoyed refreshments provided by members Montez Harvey and Patty Greene. The theme for the meeting was "The Leprechaun Within." The tables were decorated with green shamrocks and fresh flowers from Mrs. Greene's garden. |
