The Cherokee County American Red Cross held its first ARC Kids Day on Saturday, March 16. According to the organizers, it was a big success.

Twenty-three local children enjoyed the one-hour "Masters of Disasters" program focusing in on general preparedness, tornadoes and lightning. Lisa's Hawg-NDawg provided lunch of hot dogs, potato curls and barbecue for everyone present.

Fred Knowles, local artist, turned the ARC garage into a T-shirt painting studio for the day. Limestone College Athletic Department donated the shirts for the children to add the Red Cross logo and any other creative ideas.

Miss Cherokee County Teen, Sally Anne McCraw, and the Gaffney High School Interact Club volunteered with the children. Their one-on-one assistance gave the kids the opportunity to participate and feel important.

A goody bag, which contained disaster preparedness information as well as a coupon for a free McDonald's ice cream donated by Bill Mason Enterprises, was given to each student.

The ARC is considering creating an ARC Kid's Club due to the overwhelmingly positive response. For more information, contact Shellie Wylie, manager of the Cherokee County ARC, at 864-489-6066
