Grant funds will be used to upgrade East Gaffney

County officials are continuing work on a development plan that could transform portions of East Gaffney into a symbol of progress. The $20,000 Department of Commerce grant will identify strategies for enhancing the community and improving the quality of life in the East Gaffney area, according to Appalachian Council of Governments official Steve Pelissier. East Gaffney was eligible for the grant because of the concentration of low- to moderateincome households in the area, according to Pelissier. Once the planning study is completed, the area will qualify for additional grants to repair sidewalks and improve drainage as well as rehabilitate housing units and building recreational facilities. East Gaffney residents have expressed comments for the study during a series of meetings with county officials. The plan is expected to be presented at an upcoming Cherokee County Planning Commission meeting. |
