Indians snap losing streak

      The Gaffney High baseball team might not have pounded its way out of a losing streak, but John Michaels' blast was enough to beat homestanding Hillcrest on Friday. Michaels' two-run, first inning homer stood up as the Indians edged the Rams, 2-0, to break a four-game region losing streak. Gaffney improves to 1-4 in Region II-4A.

Gaffney falls to 6th place

      The Gaffney Indians felt right at home during the first round Friday of the T.W. Memorial Tournament. Unfortunately, that feeling didn't last when the tournament shifted to River Falls on day two. Playing on their home course of Cherokee National, the Indians shot a 312 to lead the tournament by five strokes after the first round.

Saints crush Crusaders; stay unbeaten in CVAC

      The No. 7-ranked Limestone men's lacrosse team made things tough on Belmont Abbey right from the start on Saturday. The Saints jumped to a 4-0 first-quarter lead en route to a 13-7 victory over their CVAC rivals. Limestone improves to 2-0 in the conference and 5-1 overall. The Crusaders remain winless in the CVAC at 0-3.

      Lady Indians finish tourney 1-2 The Gaffney High softball team finished with a 1-2 record at the Lady Wildcat Invitational Tournament this weekend. The Lady Indians beat Silver Bluff, 11-9, to open the tournament. Gaffney then lost to North Davidson, 7-4, and to Brookland-Cayce, 6-4.

Indians win tri-meet

      The Gaffney boys and girls track teams prepared for Tuesday's big meet with region rivals Spartanburg, Hillcrest and Boiling Springs with a dominating performance at Rock Hill last Thursday. The Lady Indians swept the 1,600 and 3,200 meter events to beat Rock Hill and Indian Land. The Gaffney boys team improved to 5-1 with wins over Rock Hill and Indian Land.

Johnson grabs win with late pass

      HAMPTON, Ga. - Jimmie Johnson already has his eye on the big prize. The reigning NASCAR Nextel Cup champion passed Tony Stewart three laps from the end Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway and went on to win his second straight race. ''We're thinking championship already,'' said Johnson, only four races into the 36-race season. ''That's really the mode anymore.

MAKING A SPLASH
      Kelsey Spurlin competed in the USA 8 and under state championship. She captured three gold medals, two silver medals and a fourth place ribbon. She won Gold in the 25 Free, 25 Back and 50 Back. Her time in the 50 Back was 36.39 which is a AA Time. Her silver medals came in the 100 Free and 50 Fly. She placed fourth in the 50 Free.
