Celtics fined

for Durant contact

The Boston Celtics confirmed Sunday that the team had been fined $30,000 by the NBA for excessive contact with the family of Texas star freshman and likely lottery draft pick Kevin Durant.

General manager Danny Ainge sat next to Durant's mother during the Big 12 tournament. The league said Ainge violated rules demanding that contact be kept to a minimum between team executives and potential NBA draft picks, until college players officially declare for the draft.

Sports Illustrated first reported the story on its Web site.

Michigan fires

hoops coach

Michigan coach Tommy Amaker was fired Saturday, two days after his sixth season with the Wolverines ended with an 87-66 loss at Florida State in the NIT.

Michigan went 22-13 this season. Amaker's record at Michigan was 109-83, with three 20-win seasons, but his teams went only 43-53 in the Big Ten. The Wolverines never made the NCAA tournament under Amaker.

Amaker was hired in March 2001 to replace the fired Brian Ellerbe. He inherited a mess, stemming in part from the school's lackluster facilities and the Ed Martin scandal. Martin, a former booster, told the federal government he lent $616,000 to Wolverines Chris Webber, Maurice Taylor, Robert Traylor and Louis Bullock in what the NCAA said was the largest financial scandal in its history.

Singh wins

Bay Hill

All Vijay Singh cared about was winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational, which has caused him so much grief over the years. Singh got it done Sunday with a terrific run of birdies to build a commanding lead, closing with a 3-under 67 for a two-shot victory over Rocco Mediate.
