Indians snap losing streak

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

The Gaffney High baseball team might not have pounded its way out of a losing streak, but John Michaels' blast was enough to beat homestanding Hillcrest on Friday.

Michaels' two-run, first inning homer stood up as the Indians edged the Rams, 2-0, to break a four-game region losing streak. Gaffney improves to 1-4 in Region II-4A.

Jake Watson was the other big hero in the game, giving up just five hits and striking out six to pick up the win. Watson, who struggled with his control in his last appearance against Byrnes, walked just four batters in seven innings.

"Jake pitched a great game," Gaffney coach Tom Owens said. "He didn't throw a lot of breaking balls, but he hit spots."

Gaffney mustered just three hits. Michaels added a single and Bubba Wright had the other hit.

The Indians played well defensively, especially shortstop Michael Hughey, first baseman Wright, catcher Michaels, center fielder Dylan Jolley and outfielder Justin Wilkins, who made a diving catch.

"We made some great defensive plays," Owens said. "We played well. Everybody seemed relaxed. They didn't put pressure on themselves. It was a good game to watch."

Gaffney steps out of conference today to visit York.

The Indians will return to region play on Wednesday against visiting Dorman.
