WHAT'S UP Easter services ¦ Circle of Grace Lutheran Chapel will hold a Tenebrae service on Good Friday at 7 p.m. This service of light and darkness focuses on Jesus' last words from the cross. A brief meditation and hymn will accompany each of the seven words of Christ. As each word is read, an altar candle will be extinguished leaving the congregation in darkness as the last prayer is prayed. Worshippers leave with great awareness of our Lord's sacrifice and extreme anticipation of Easter Sunday's proclamation - that of victory over the grave. Pastor Lageman invites the community to join them in the Limestone College Chapel at 7 p.m. Friday and again at 9:30 a.m. for Easter Day worship. ¦ Eastside Baptist Church, 1284 E. Cherokee St., Blacksburg, will present an Easter celebration,"Then Came the Morning," Sunday at 6 p.m. ¦ New Pleasant Baptist Church will have a special service Sunday at 9 a.m., "Easter's Empty Tomb: An Unparalleled Reward - An Eternity to Live." An Easter sunrise service will be at 7 a.m., followed by breakfast at 8 a.m. Sunday School will be at 10 a.m. ¦ The Shady Grove Baptist Church Youth Ministry will present its annual Easter program on Sunday at 9:45 a.m. There will be an Easter egg hunt and hot dog meal at the church Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. Children and adults are welcome. ¦ Southside Baptist Church, 204 W. O'Neal St., will have a sunrise service at 7:30 a.m. Sunday. The service will be on the hill overlooking the church. In case of inclement weather, the service will be moved into the sanctuary. Following the sunrise service, there will be a country style sit-down breakfast in the fellowship hall. The meal is free and everyone is invited. ¦ Easter Sunday morning worship services will be held at Bethel Baptist Church, 218 Dr. L.M. Rosemond Lane, Sunday. Praise and worship will begin at 7 a.m. with the call to worship 7:15 a.m. The Easter message will be delivered by the pastor, Dr. J.W. Sanders Sr. Breakfast will be served immediately after the services and Sunday School will follow breakfast. ¦ Central Baptist Church invites the community to attend worship services Sunday. There will be an Easter sunrise service at 7 a.m. The adult choir will present an Easter worship experience," Great Is Our God," by Keith Christopher, at the morning worship services at 11. ¦ The Youth Ministry of Island Creek Baptist Church, 2112 Battleground Road, Cowpens, will present a playlet, "The First Easter Story," Sunday at 8:45 a.m. ¦ The Fellowship of Churches' Easter sunrise services for Green Bethel, Island Creek, Knuckles Chapel, Holy Temple, Mt. Calvary in Cowpens; Lewis Chapel, Mt. Calvary in Whitestone; Shady Grove and White Plains Baptist in Gaffney will be held Sunday at 5:30 a.m. at Island Creek Baptist Church, 2112 Battleground Road, Cowpens. The Easter message will be delivered by the Rev. Kerwin Wray, pastor of Knuckles Chapel Baptist Church. Music will be rendered by the combined choirs of the churches. ¦ Freedom Fellowship Baptist Church will have a sunrise service on Easter Sunday at 8 a.m. Breakfast will be served in the fellowship hall immediately after the service. A regular service will follow the breakfast at approximately 9 a.m. Community events ¦ Pam McMillan, an artist from Spartanburg, will be at the Gaffney Senior Center on Thursday, April 12, to teach a class on oil painting. No experience in painting is needed. Ms. McMillan will teach participants how to paint an "Amazing Grace Magnolia" on canvas. Cost is $30 which includes all supplies. The class will be from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Call Joan Wood, 487-2725, to register for the class and for more information. Meetings ¦ The Tuesday Woman's Club will meet April 10 at 4 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Sydney Gosnell. Co-hostess will be Mrs. Gene Moorhead. ¦ The Cherokee County Republican Women will meet Monday, April 9, at 11:45 a.m. at Ryan's Steak House. Jason Miller, a representative from Gov. Mark Sanford's staff, will be the speaker. This will be an opportunity to seek answers to questions or concerns you have about what is happening in our state government and our governor's responses or actions to problems. Church events ¦ The Junior Missionary and Advisors of the Thickety Mountain Baptist Association and state officers of South Carolina will meet Monday, April 9, at 6 p.m. at the Thickety Mountain Baptist Association Building to finalize plans for the annual Junior Missionary retreat. All advisors are urged to attend. Support groups ¦ The Alzheimer's Association, S.C. Chapter, announces that the Cherokee County Alzheimer's Support Group will meet at noon on Thursday, April 12, at Magnolia's of Gaffney, 223 Tiffany Park. All caregivers, family and friend of persons with Alzheimer's disease are welcome to attend. Lunch will be provided by Magnolia's of Gaffney.
