Public water will likely soon be coming to the 99 Island Road area of the county.

Cherokee County Council on Monday voted unanimously to apply for a $500,000 Department of Commerce Community Development Block Grant to supply water to about 45 households on 99 Island Road, county finance director Mike Vassey said.

The county has already accepted bids for the first phase of the 99 Island Road water project. That project will bring water to about 80 households.

Vassey said the projects are needed since contaminants have been detected in some of the drinking wells on 99 Island Road.

If approved for the most recent grant, the county would commit $50,000 to the project. The remainder of the money would come from the state.
