Residents urged to use landfill

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Staff Writer larry@gaffneyledger.com

Cherokee County Landfill Manager Phillip Ellis says county residents can play a key role in keeping the county beautiful - take your household waste to the landfill and don't dump it along the side of the road.

Ellis said convenience center dumpsters are available near the front entrance of the landfill for household garbage. There are also recycling dumpsters for plastic bottles, tin cans, aluminum cans and used oil. Residents can use the dumpsters any time.

There is no charge to dump most items at the landfill. However, there is a $10 charge for computers and televisions and a $49-per-ton charge for asbestos. Businesses and contractors pay $25 a ton. Residents or business owners who want to dump asbestos must have the proper paperwork from the state Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Waste items, such as construction materials, as well as scrap metal, must be separated.

There's also a place at the landfill for old tires and batteries. There is a limit of six per person for those items.

Items which can't be taken to the landfill include paints and lead-based painted material.

The landfill is located at 192 Lemuels Road. It is open from 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 7:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
