Gaffney edges Mavs in playoff
Gaffney's Jody Martin, who was the medalist against Byrnes, shoots his second shot on the second hole on Monday. What home course advantage?
The Gaffney High golf team overcame Mauldin and the unfamiliarity of playing at Holly Tree Country Club to down the host Mavericks in a sudden death playoff on Tuesday.
The teams finished regulation tied at 154, but Gaffney made short work of Mauldin on the first playoff hole to capture the tri-match by two strokes. Gaffney's Adam Goins birdied and Jody Martin parred the extra hole, while the Mauldin golfers had a par and a bogey.
Gaffney coach Mark Ireton said his team played well considering it was playing on an unfamiliar course.
"We did alright for the first time we saw the course," Ireton said.
The Indians will see the course again when Holly Tree hosts the region tournament.
Goins and Daniel Whisenant each shot a 37 to tie with Mauldin's Austin Alvarez for the low round.
Zach Bridges had a 39 and Phillip Rogers shot a 41 for the Indians.
J.L. Mann High School finished third with a 161.
Jody Martin was the story on Monday, shooting a 1-over par 37 to lead the Indians to a 153- 171 victory over Byrnes at Cherokee National.
"Jody is really starting to come around for us," Ireton said.
Goins and Zach Bridges each shot 38 for the Indians. Jacob Watson posted a 40 to round out the scoring for Gaffney.
Ireton praised Goins and Bridges.
"They did a good job," he said. "They brought it home for us to solidify our win."
The Indians play Dorman today.
