Gaffney primed for the playoffs
Ledger photo by LARRY HILLIARD Julie Sarratt, who got the win on Monday, will start the Lady Indians' playoff opener on Thursday. The Lady Indians sure are playing like a playoff team.
Julie Sarratt pitched seven scoreless innings and Courtney Campbell singled twice to lead Gaffney to a 3-0 win over visiting Broome in the regular-season finale on Monday.
The Lady Indians begin district playoff action on Thursday at North Augusta. T.L. Hanna and York round out the district bracket.
Both teams struggled offensively until the fifth when the Lady Indians scored all of their runs.
Courtney Campbell got things going with a single. After Sara Griffith's sacrifice bunt, Morgan Hughey walked.
Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Campbell scored on an error. Hayden Kidd, in her first game back following an illness, delivered a key two-run double.
Gaffney coach Kelly Ellis said the win should give her team momentum heading into postseason play.
"It's going to be tough, but we should be okay if we have our bats," she said.
Hughey and Kidd are swinging the hot bats entering the playoffs, according to Ellis.
Sarratt is also rounding into postseason form.
"There is more movement on her ball now," the Gaffney coach said.
North Augusta, the Region IV champs, are 20-2.
The Lady Indians finished 6-6 in Region II and 14-8 overall.
