Shrine Bowl wannabes to face strength, speed tests
South Carolina Shrine Bowl Head Coach Dave Farnham announced Monday the Sandlappers will employ a combine process which will measure and test height, weight, vertical jump, 40-yard dash, pro agility (20 Yard) shuttle, and bench press.
This combine will be for rising seniors only and will be included as part of the overall selection process for the 2007 South Carolina Shrine Bowl Player Selections.
"The North Carolina Tar Heels have been using a similar type combine process for the last several years and it has proven successful on the field and resulting in the Tar Heel players signing scholarships," Farnham said. "In 2006, of North Carolina's 44 Shrine Bowl players, 43 signed scholarships. South Carolina, on the other hand, had 44 players with only 22 signing scholarships. There were other players in South Carolina that eventually signed scholarships, but did not participate in the Shrine Bowl. Our hope is for a more efficient selection process, performance on the field and scholarship opportunities for our players in South Carolina."
The combine will be held on Saturday, May 19.
Registration will be from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. for Class A and AAAA. Testing follows from 9 a.m. until noon. Class AA and AAA will register from 1 to 2 p.m., with testing from 2 to 5 p.m.
