      Cherokee County School District maintenance workers Ronnie Wilson and Kenny Estes assemble one of the 10 picnic tables that will be placed in the Blacksburg Elementary courtyard. The school held a fundraiser recently to purchase the tables.

County facing budget deficit
      Cherokee County property owners could be facing a 2.3- mill tax hike this year. Cherokee County Council could approve the increase and eliminate nearly $200,000 from its capital budget to bridge a projected $516,000 shortfall in the proposed $18.4 million budget, under a spending plan summary presented by Cherokee County Interim Administrator Ben Clary on Monday.

Suspect in two armed robberies arrested
      The Blacksburg Police Department has arrested a man in connection with two armed robberies that occurred over the weekend. Barry Clayton, 44, of 234 Wendy Drive, Blacksburg, is charged with two counts of armed robbery and remains jailed awaiting a bond hearing.

County will take hard look at recycling routes
      Recycling will be the hot topic at the next Cherokee County Public Works Committee meeting. Cherokee County Councilman Bailey Humphries, who chairs the committee, said the committee will meet Thursday to review the participation rates on existing routes to determine if any changes are needed.

Legislation introduced to require runoffs in school board elections
      School trustee Mike Ellis was elected to a school board term last November despite receiving only 28 percent of the vote in a hotly contested District 1 race involving six candidates. Since 1992, the top vote-getter in each school board race has been declared the winner.

REMEMBERING DANNY MAC
      A total of 31 bikers and walkers participated Saturday in the Danny Mac 100 Memorial Bike Ride. The annual bike ride raised $9,000 to benefit Iron City Ministries, a nonprofit charity that serves needy families in Cherokee County.

Wind gusts of 44 mph hit county
"The damage was scattered."
      Strong winds from a powerful storm toppled trees onto houses and cars here Monday. The winds, which were part of the same system that dumped record rains on the East Coast, also caused sporadic power outages. A fallen tree damaged several cars at a Limestone College parking lot, Cherokee County Emergency Preparedness Director Rick Peterson said.

      Limestone College is hosting its ninth annual Health Fair on Thursday, April 19. The fair will feature twentyfive local physicians and medical offices from the community, and will be located in Stephenson Dining Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

20th Annual Bar H Rodeo and Country Festival set for May 11-12
      The 20th annual Bar H Championship Rodeo and Country Festival will be held Friday, May 11, and Saturday, May 12. The event will be at the Bar H Arena in Boiling Springs, N.C. The country festival will begin each day at 6 p.m. and the championship rodeo will begin at 8 p.m. The admission price includes the country festival and the championship rodeo.

Limestone SIFE wins regionals in Atlanta
"We were huge underdogs, facing much larger colleges and universities."
      The Limestone College SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise) Team returned to Gaffney as winners after participating in the Atlanta, Ga., SIFE USA Regional Competition on April 5. The Limestone SIFE team won League I at the competition, beating out Georgia Southern University, the University of Florida, Southern Polytechnic State, and Alabama A&M.
