Blacksburg ready for long postseason run
Despite moving up to Class 2A this season, the good times keep rolling for the Blacksburg High School baseball team.
The Wildcats, who will be making their fourth straight postseason appearance, open district playoff action Thursday at Abbeville. The game will begin at 6 p.m. Pelion and Batesburg-Leesville round out the four-team district playoff field.
"It's a big accomplishment for our team, especially moving up to Class 2A this season," Blacksburg coach Toby Elliott said.
Elliott was on hand to scout Abbeville on Monday.
"They are fundamentally sound," the Blacksburg coach said. "They try to make contact and put the ball into play."
Dustin Byars will get the start for the Wildcats. Elliott said Byars' success will depend on his ability to keep the Abbeville batters off balance.
"Dustin needs to get over his off speed pitches," Elliott said.
Andy Norman, the team's ace, will likely get the start for Abbeville.
"We didn't see him on Monday, so we think he'll pitch against us," the Blacksburg coach said.
The Wildcats enter the playoffs on a hot streak, winning four of their last five games, including Friday's regular-season ending 13-2 victory over Jonesville.
Gary Gaut allowed just one hit and one run in three innings to pick up the win. Rusty Price gave up one hit and one run in the fourth inning before giving way to Cameron Byars, who pitched a scoreless fifth inning.
Price was also the big hitting star with two hits and five RBIs.
Freshman catcher Will Raines and Gaut have also been swinging a hot bat.
"I like the way we are hitting the ball," Elliott said. "We are scoring runs. We are putting runners on base."
But Elliott does have some concerns "I'm concerned about our defense," he said. "We can't make errors.
