USC quarterback
returns to team
South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia, arrested twice this year, returned to the team earlier than expected when coach Steve Spurrier lifted his suspension at the end of spring practice, the school confirmed Tuesday.
The highly-touted recruit, who graduated high school early to get a jump on learning Spurrier's offense, attended a team meeting Monday and will be allowed to go to workouts. ''It was coach's decision,'' athletic department spokesman Steve Fink said.
The freshman quarterback was arrested Feb. 17 and charged with drunkenness and failure to stop for a police officer. He was suspended after the incident but then reinstated.
He was arrested a second time March 3 on charges of malicious injury to personal property after a professor reported that Garcia had used a key to scratch the man's car parked near the university.
Garcia applied to a pre-trial intervention program rather than face prosecution on two misdemeanor charges. The failure to stop for an officer charge was dropped.
Garcia did not participate in spring practice.
Investigators talk to
Gamecocks' Boyd
Richland County deputies continue to investigate a shooting last weekend at a club where several South Carolina players were at a party.
No one was injured when a confrontation between the Gamecock players and gang members at the club near Columbia Mall early Sunday morning ended in gunfire, sheriff's spokesman Lt. Chris Cowan said.
A witness told deputies senior running back Corey Boyd fired the first shot of the confrontation into the air, according to a police report.
Gang members then fired back, sending hundreds of people at the party scattering, according to the report.
Deputies found drug paraphernalia and what they think was marijuana residue inside the club, the police report said.
Investigators have spoken to Boyd and have not determined if the story from the witness is accurate, Cowan said.
No charges have been filed and the incident is still under investigation, Cowan said.
Gamecock athletics officials said they will wait until more information is available before considering disciplinary action against Boyd or any other football players.
Boyd missed the 2005 season after violating athletic department policy. He returned the next season and led the Gamecocks in rushing with 823 yards.
