Veteran broadcaster will purchase AM radio station
The transaction reportedly will include the lot and building located on Providence Road. Gaffney native and longtime broadcaster Dennis Fowler has announced he will purchase WEAC, Gaffney Broadcasting's AM sister station to WAGI-FM.
Fowler said he is making the purchase to ensure that local residents will continue to receive the same programming they have come to love.
"I wanted to make certain the community is still able to enjoy the same type programming they have become accustomed to with WAGI," he stated in a press release. "While WEAC is a daytime-only station, it will be the same source of news and information WAGI has been."
Swap and Shop, Carolina in the Morning, obituaries, news and sports will remain on air on the station, which is located at 1500 on the AM dial.
But what about Gaffney High football games?
Fowler said he has arranged for another area FM station to carry the games and feature the same announcers. He declined to reveal what station that would be.
Fowler said in the statement that he is buying the AM station from Davidson Media Group, the new owners of WAGI-FM. The sale price was not disclosed.
Fowler has said the staff of Gaffney Broadcasting will remain with WEAC. Many of those employees have been with the station for more than 20 years, including Gaffney Broadcasting President and General Manager Ron Owenby who will reach the 40-year milestone in June.
Fowler first joined Gaffney Broadcasting in January 1971. He is also the county coroner.
He is married to the former Kim Childers and they have two children, Leighlan, 11, and Lexi, 8.
