Fund raisers

Buffalo Baptist Church in Blacksburg will have a yard sale Saturday beginning at 7 a.m. The church is located at the junction of Hwy. 5 and 18N.

Temple Baptist Church will have a yard sale, bake sale and breakfast Saturday from 7-11 a.m. All proceeds will go to the Acteens for a mission trip.

Draytonville Baptist Church will have a yard sale Saturday in the Family Life Center from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. The event will also feature a bake sale, and sausage, egg and gravy biscuits can be purchased. Proceeds go to Relay for Life of Cherokee County.

Love Springs Baptist Church, 554 Sunny Slope Drive, Cowpens, will have a yard sale Saturday from 6 a.m. until, rain or shine. There will be a large variety of items.

There will be yard and hot dog sale at New Harvest Ministries, 215 Pecan St., on Saturday starting at 8 a.m.

A yard sale will be held Saturday from 7-11 a.m. at the Masonic Lodge, 219 E. Floyd Baker Blvd., sponsored by Queen Esther Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. Proceeds will go to Meals on Wheels and Foster Parent Association.

Education

An American Red Cross Lifeguard training course will be offered at Cherokee National Golf and Recreation Club beginning May 19. Participants must be at least 15 years old and be good swimmers. The 31-hour course will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, and end on Friday, May 25, at 9 p.m. Cost is $100. Contact Boyd Meetze, 489- 2563, or more information.

The Cherokee County Adult/Community Education program will offer a Microsoft Word Computer Class beginning Tuesday, May 8. The class will review cut, copy, paste, change margins, add headers and create tab stops. Participants will also learn to create e-mail merged letters, mailing labels and how to use the draw tools such as Word Art, lines, arrows, text boxes and geometric shapes. Special events

First Baptist Church of Blacksburg will sponsor a oneday softball tournament and home run derby on Saturday, May 19, to raise funds for a Montana mission trip. Games will be played at Lenzer Circle Park and Cherokee Falls. Team registration is $100; registration forms must be mailed by May 14. The home run derby has a $10 fee with the winner receiving a $50 prize. Early registration is not required; bring your own pitcher. For more information, call 864-839-2421.

The Gaffney Senior Center's craft show has been rescheduled from May 5 to May 19 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Anyone interested in having a space to sell items, like crafts, home parties, etc., should call Joan Wood at 487-2725. Spaces are $20 with the monies raised going to home-delivered meals from the Senior Center. The Blacksburg Rotary will be holding a barbecue fundraiser for the Senior Center that day with lunch being served starting at 11:30 a.m.

Meetings

Democratic Women will meet Monday, May 7, at 6 p.m. at House of Pizza. Updates on the Democratic presidential election will be given by Nancy Atkins and Sharon Cauthen.

Notices

The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Upstate will have summer camp registration May 8- 25 at the main office at 201 Pecan St. from 10:30 until noon and at Mary Bramlett Elementary School in the school cafeteria from 5-8 p.m. The camp is for rising first graders through rising fifth graders. The camp costs $30 per week per child and will be held from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. June 11-July 11 (year-round) and June 11-Aug. 17 (traditional). Breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack will be provided. Church news The Senior Missionary of Philadelphia Baptist Church, 1195 Pacolet Hwy., will observe its 55th annual Wo m a n ' s Day service on Sunday, May 13. Sister Meika Denett Jones, associate minister of Suck Creek Baptist Church, will be the speaker.

Bluegrass Inspiration will sing at Gaffney Free Baptist, 122 Crestmont Drive, on Sunday, May 6, at 4 p.m.

Way of Life Praise and Worship Center, 1320 Old Georgia Hwy., will have a pre-Mother's Day celebration Sunday at 5 p.m. Guest speaker will be Juanita Dewberry, assistant minister of Bethel Baptist Church.

Central Baptist Church invites the community to attend spring revival services each Tuesday in May at 7 p.m. Special guest pastors and singers will be at each service. Speakers and singers include: May 8: Rev. John Smith and The Rhynes; May 15, Rev. Noah Crowe and Nanda Bedenbaugh, Loretta O'Donald and Teri Woodward; May 22, Rev. Raymond Whitfield and Benny and Cindy Bridges; May 29, Dr. Thad Dowdle and T.J. Tyler.

The Senior Choir of Island Creek Baptist Church, 2112 Battleground Road, Cowpens, will celebrate its anniversary Sunday at 5 p.m. The Rev. James L. Smith along with his choirs and congregation of Palmer Grove Baptist Church, Kingstown, N.C., will be special guests.

The annual Christian Retreat of the Thickety Mountain Baptist Association will be held Saturday, May 26, at the Associational Building on Old Post Road. Registration will be from 8:15-8:45 a.m. and the opening session starts at 8:45 with state president, Cheynia Allen, presiding. Charlexis Bridges, state secretary, will participate as well. All youths and advisor are urged to attend. A special class will be held for parents to inform them of the rules/regulations of our schools' activities. The guidance counselors - Loraine Wray, Kesia Long and Courtney Briscoe - will be in charge. Games, prizes and other activities will be held. All advisors and juniors are urged to attend.

The Junior Missionaries Advisors of the Thickety Mountain Baptist Association will meet Tuesday, May 8, at 6 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church to finalize plans for the annual Christian Retreat, which be held Saturday, May 26. All advisors are urged to be present at this important meeting.

The Male Chorus of Limestone Missionary Baptist Church will celebrate its 36th anniversary Saturday at 6 p.m. There will be various choirs from the area in attendance.

The Rev. Mike Frazier invites you to the Cherokee Creek Baptist Church ground breaking ceremony of their new church on the corner of Buck Shoals Road. Sunday School will be at 10 a.m., with the Memorial Day worship service at 11 a.m., followed by lunch in the Family Life Center. The ground breaking ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. with guest speaker, Dr. Donnie Padgett, Director of Missions for the Broad River Baptist Association.

Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church will celebrate the second pastoral anniversary of the Rev. C.A. Wallace on Sunday at 4 p.m. Guest speaker will be Dr. B.D. Snoddy, pastor of Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Spartanburg.

Classes

The American Red Cross of Cherokee County will conduct the following health and safety classes this month: May 7-8, 6-10 p.m, CPR and First Aid, $49 fee; May 10, 11 a.m.-noon, general caregiving skills, $10 fee; May 15, 5:30- 6:30 p.m., Caring for Alzheimer's, $10. There are scholarship funds available for any of these classes. Preregistration and pre-payment is required. All classes will be held at the ARC Service Center, 301 N.
