WHAT'S UP Fund raisers Buffalo Baptist Church in Blacksburg will have a yard sale Saturday beginning at 7 a.m. The church is located at the junction of Hwy. 5 and 18N. Temple Baptist Church will have a yard sale, bake sale and breakfast Saturday from 7-11 a.m. All proceeds will go to the Acteens for a mission trip. Draytonville Baptist Church will have a yard sale Saturday in the Family Life Center from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. The event will also feature a bake sale, and sausage, egg and gravy biscuits can be purchased. Proceeds go to Relay for Life of Cherokee County. Love Springs Baptist Church, 554 Sunny Slope Drive, Cowpens, will have a yard sale Saturday from 6 a.m. until, rain or shine. There will be a large variety of items. There will be yard and hot dog sale at New Harvest Ministries, 215 Pecan St., on Saturday starting at 8 a.m. A yard sale will be held Saturday from 7-11 a.m. at the Masonic Lodge, 219 E. Floyd Baker Blvd., sponsored by Queen Esther Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. Proceeds will go to Meals on Wheels and Foster Parent Association. Education An American Red Cross Lifeguard training course will be offered at Cherokee National Golf and Recreation Club beginning May 19. Participants must be at least 15 years old and be good swimmers. The 31-hour course will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, and end on Friday, May 25, at 9 p.m. Cost is $100. Contact Boyd Meetze, 489- 2563, or more information. The Cherokee County Adult/Community Education program will offer a Microsoft Word Computer Class beginning Tuesday, May 8. The class will review cut, copy, paste, change margins, add headers and create tab stops. Participants will also learn to create e-mail merged letters, mailing labels and how to use the draw tools such as Word Art, lines, arrows, text boxes and geometric shapes. Participants must be able to type. Call 487-7152 as soon as possible to register or go by 130 Leadmine St. Special events First Baptist Church of Blacksburg will sponsor a oneday softball tournament and home run derby on Saturday, May 19, to raise funds for a Montana mission trip. Games will be played at Lenzer Circle Park and Cherokee Falls. Team registration is $100; registration forms must be mailed by May 14. The home run derby has a $10 fee with the winner receiving a $50 prize. Early registration is not required; bring your own pitcher. For more information, call 864-839-2421. The Gaffney Senior Center's craft show has been rescheduled from May 5 to May 19 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Anyone interested in having a space to sell items, like crafts, home parties, etc., should call Joan Wood at 487-2725. Spaces are $20 with the monies raised going to home-delivered meals from the Senior Center. The Blacksburg Rotary will be holding a barbecue fundraiser for the Senior Center that day with lunch being served starting at 11:30 a.m. Meetings Democratic Women will meet Monday, May 7, at 6 p.m. at House of Pizza. Notices The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Upstate will have summer camp registration May 8- 25 at the main office at 201 Pecan St. from 10:30 until noon and at Mary Bramlett Elementary School in the school cafeteria from 5-8 p.m. The camp is for rising first graders through rising fifth graders. The camp costs $30 per week per child and will be held from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. June 11-July 11 (year-round) and June 11-Aug. 17 (traditional). Breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack will be provided. The Male Chorus of Limestone Missionary Baptist Church will celebrate its 36th anniversary Saturday at 6 p.m. There will be various choirs from the area in attendance. The Rev. Mike Frazier invites you to the Cherokee Creek Baptist Church ground breaking ceremony of their new church on the corner of Buck Shoals Road.
